Tree Service in Lakeway, TX

Rough Hollow, The Hills, Lakeway proper. Steep limestone, live oak motts, wildfire fuel and driveways that decide what equipment can reach you.

Lakeway is the hardest place we work, and it is entirely down to terrain. Houses are cut into limestone hillsides above Lake Travis, driveways drop away at angles that make a chipper think twice, and half the properties in Rough Hollow and The Hills have their back garden somewhere below the house rather than behind it.

The trees are live oak and Ashe juniper, with some Texas red oak and Texas persimmon mixed in. Big, old, and often standing on very little soil.

Access sets the price here

In most cities we quote from the tree. In Lakeway we quote from the driveway. A 50-foot live oak that would be $1,200 on a flat Pflugerville lot can be $2,000 here, because the crew is carrying every round uphill to a truck parked on a slope, and a crane may have nowhere to set up at all.

Send us photos of the driveway and the route to the tree, not just the tree. It is the single most useful thing you can do to get an accurate first quote in this city.

Wildfire is the live issue

Western Travis County is genuine wildland-urban interface, and Ashe juniper is extremely flammable: high oil content, fine dead material held inside the canopy, and it carries fire upward into the crowns of everything around it. A dense cedar stand running right up to a Lakeway house is a real risk, not a theoretical one.

Defensible space work is a large part of what we do out here: clearing cedar back from structures, removing ladder fuels so a ground fire cannot climb into the canopy, and lifting crowns clear of roofs. The first thirty feet around the house matters most, and it is worth doing before the summer rather than during it.

Keep the oaks where you can. They hold moisture, they burn far less readily than juniper, and they are most of what makes the place look like it does.

Oak wilt hits hard on this side

Western Travis County has some of the worst oak wilt in Texas, and Lakeway’s live oaks grow in exactly the connected motts the disease travels through. Whole streets have lost canopy.

Which makes the pruning rule non-negotiable here. No oak pruning between February 1 and June 30, and paint every oak wound the same day it is made, in any month. If a crew offers to trim your live oaks in April, send them away. Trenching is often the only way to stop an active infection crossing a street, and it works best when neighbours share it. See oak wilt treatment.

Permits and the layers above them

Lakeway has its own tree and vegetation provisions in its city code, and neighbouring jurisdictions out here each run their own. On top of that, Rough Hollow, The Hills and several other communities have architectural control committees whose landscape rules bite harder in practice than the city’s. Lake Travis shoreline properties can also fall under LCRA jurisdiction.

Three possible layers, then. We check the city and will tell you what we find, but your HOA covenants are yours to read. See the permit guide for how the region compares.

What we do in Lakeway

Tree removal, trimming, oak wilt treatment and trenching, cedar clearing and defensible space, stump grinding, hazardous tree work and emergency callouts.

Getting to you

Lakeway is about twenty miles west of central Austin on 620, and traffic on that road is the variable rather than distance. Emergency response is typically three hours, longer at peak times. No travel surcharge.

Questions from Lakeway homeowners

Why is tree removal more expensive in Lakeway?

Terrain. Steep limestone driveways limit what equipment can reach the tree, and wood frequently has to be carried uphill by hand. The same live oak that costs $1,200 on a flat Pflugerville lot often runs $1,800 to $2,200 in Rough Hollow or The Hills. Photograph the driveway when you send tree photos.

How much cedar should I clear around my house?

Concentrate on the first thirty feet. Ashe juniper is highly flammable and carries fire up into the canopy, so removing it close to the structure and taking out ladder fuels underneath is where defensible space earns its money. Keep live oaks where you can, since they hold moisture and burn far less readily.

Do I need HOA approval to remove a tree in Lakeway?

Very likely. Rough Hollow, The Hills and several other Lakeway communities run architectural control committees whose landscape rules are often stricter than the city’s own provisions. Shoreline properties may also fall under LCRA jurisdiction. Check your covenants before booking, and we will check the city side.

My neighbourhood is losing its live oaks. What is happening?

Almost certainly oak wilt, which is severe in western Travis County. It moves between live oaks through grafted roots, so it takes out streets rather than single trees. Trenching between infected and healthy trees is the only thing that stops root spread, and it works best when neighbours organise it together.

Can you get a crane to a hillside property?

Often not, which is the practical reality of Lakeway. A crane needs a level setup, ground that takes outrigger loads, and clear air above. Many hillside driveways rule all three out, so we climb and rig instead. That takes longer and costs more, and it is why we look at access before quoting.

We also cover Austin, Cedar Park and Leander.
